Why Neuroscience?

The inner workings of the brain have been shrouded in mystery since humans began to contemplate their own thoughts. Modern advances in technology, genetics and data science have begun to shed light on these mysteries at an accelerating pace. At its core, neuroscience is about understanding the brain and using that understanding for the betterment of humanity.

In the past decade, we have come to understand the genetic basis of some neurological disorders, developed sophisticated imaging tools to visualize the workings and interconnections of the brain, advanced computational theories that explain information processing in the brain, and engineered breakthrough neuroprosthetics that can restore lost sensory and brain function. The reason this was possible? Neuroscientists, engineers and clinicians worked together to make these advancements happen.

Neuroscience at Rice

Rice University's partnership with our colleagues in the Texas Medical Center forms the largest concentration of neuroscience researchers, engineers, and educators in the world. We are in a unique position to lead in creating new scientific and engineering breakthroughs through research, as well as provide a world-class educational mission for training tomorrow's neuroscience scholars, scientists and engineers. Rice is rapidly building one of the best computational, developmental, systems, and engineering neuroscience programs in the country.

Programs of Study

Rice is currently developing a B.A. Degree Program with a major in Neuroscience. The program will produce graduates with a broad background in the multidisciplinary field of neuroscience. Disciplines emphasized in the program range from integrative neuroscience to neuroengineering. The program will provide opportunities for experiential learning, as well as an emphasis on advanced quantitative and computational skill. Our minor in Neuroscience provides a strong education and complements a wide variety of majors.
